Among the seven cars, the BMW 3 series and the Lexus IS proved to be the best overall performers. Both earned the silver ‘Top Safety Picks’ title. The two luxury cars performed well in IIHS’ front and side crash tests and garnered acceptable ratings for their seat/head restraint designs in rear tests. “Results for the BMW and Lexus show that manufacturers can design cars to protect people in the three most common kinds of crashes that lead to injuries,” says Adrian Lund, IIHS President.

Meanwhile, the Ford Fusion was the only car in the group that did not garner a good rating in the frontal test. The Fusion, which was tested without its optional airbags, also earned a poor rating in the side test and marginal rating for rear crash protection. Overall, the Fusion earned the lowest overall ratings. The other vehicles fared better with the Hyundai Sonata and the Pontiac G6 showing big improvements in front and side tests compared to their predecessors.
