Fiat engineers are working hard on the firms smallest model yet, the Topolino. The 3.20 metre car will rival the Smart ForTwo, the upcoming Toyota iQ and Volkswagen Up! city cars.

The original Topolino (Mickey Mouse in Italian) was sold from 1936 to 1955. Judging by the mule, the new car will have a high roofline to maximise headroom and interior space, however, the new model will be based of the shortened platform of the Fiat 500, which is based of the 2003 Fiat Panda. Unlike the Smart ForTwo and Toyota iQ, the vehicle will have 4 full-sized seats.

The newcomer is due to reach showrooms by 2011.
